JAMMU, JAN 05: In a determined effort to tackle the drug menace, Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) made remarkable strides in 2024 by combining enforcement actions with public awareness initiatives. The anti-drug campaign yielded significant results, reinforcing the department’s commitment to uproot narco-crimes in the district.
As per the statement issued to The Newsroom 24 – Awaz, Police registered 200 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and arrested 300 individuals involved in drug peddling. Among these, 246 arrests and 153 FIRs were related to heroin (Chitta). Additionally, 83 vehicles used in drug-related activities were seized.
Highlighting its zero-tolerance approach, Jammu Police detained 19 hardcore drug peddlers under the stringent PIT NDPS Act. The department also struck a blow to the financial networks of drug syndicates by attaching 12 immovable properties worth over Rs. 4.69 crore and 3 vehicles valued at Rs. 12.5 lakh. Furthermore, 4 drug hotspots were demolished in a decisive move to dismantle trafficking hubs.
The year also saw substantial contraband recoveries, including 43.854 kilograms of heroin, valued at several hundred crores in the black market, marking a significant achievement in disrupting the supply chain.
To complement enforcement efforts, Jammu Police organized 19 drug awareness programs, 52 Police-Community Partnership Group (PCPG) meetings, 47 Thana Diwas events, and 62 debates. These initiatives engaged the public, particularly youth, in fostering a drug-free society.
Recognizing the importance of rehabilitation, Jammu Police inaugurated the Police Drug De-addiction, Rehabilitation, and Mental Health Care Centre at Channi, Jammu, in March 2024. This state-of-the-art facility replaces the earlier center established in 2013 and offers comprehensive care for drug addicts. Since its inception, the center has treated 16,645 outpatients and 1,915 inpatients, with 1,486 OPD and 287 IPD cases handled in 2024 alone. Efforts are underway to further enhance these facilities.
The Jammu Police appeals to the public to contribute to the fight against drugs by reporting any information on drug peddling or consumption via helpline number 100, assuring confidentiality of the informants.
With its robust enforcement, awareness campaigns, and rehabilitation programs, Jammu Police continues to lead the charge in safeguarding the community from the scourge of drugs under the ongoing War on Drug.
