JAMMU, MAR 01: Ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, the Legal Metrology Department (LMD) Jammu & Kashmir has intensified market inspections across various districts to ensure compliance with the Legal Metrology Act and other trade regulations. The enforcement drive, conducted under the supervision of Controller Legal Metrology Anuradha Gupta, aims to curb malpractices and safeguard consumer interests during the festive period.
As per the statement issued to The Newsroom 24 – Awaz, enforcement teams conducted inspections in multiple locations, including Jammu, Doda, Rajouri, Srinagar, Kulgam, and Bandipora. In Doda, a joint inspection was carried out in coordination with the district administration, covering around 40 traders. In Srinagar, teams inspected the Batmalloo and Tengpora areas, imposing and collecting penalties amounting to ₹6,000 on the spot.
Similarly, in Rajouri, inspections were conducted at various shops, including meat and poultry outlets, in collaboration with the district administration. One case was booked, and a composition sum of ₹1,000 was imposed. In Jammu, six cases were compounded, leading to the collection of fines totaling ₹8,000. Additionally, in Kulgam, a market inspection drive resulted in the registration of four cases against erring traders, with a total penalty of ₹6,500. In Bandipora, three cases were booked, and ₹1,500 was collected as a composition sum.
Controller Legal Metrology Anuradha Gupta emphasized the department’s commitment to ensuring fair trade practices, particularly during Ramadan, and urged traders to strictly adhere to the Legal Metrology Act. She assured that market inspections would continue in the coming days to curb irregularities and protect consumer rights.
