Jammu, April 27:

In a significant move to advance surgical excellence in North India, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu successfully concluded its Second National Temporal Bone Dissection Conference. Held on April 25-26, the two-day intensive workshop at the Vijaypur campus brought together ENT specialists and residents from across the country to master the intricate anatomy of the ear.

Bridging the Gap: From Anatomy to Life-Saving Surgery

The conference addressed a critical need in modern healthcare: the rising burden of ear diseases, specifically Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media. Because the temporal bone houses delicate structures like the facial nerve and the inner ear, “dry runs” via cadaveric dissection are considered the gold standard for surgical safety.

Key Highlights of the Scientific Program:

  • Cadaveric Dissection: Hands-on training facilitated by the Department of Anatomy.

  • Advanced Procedures: Focused sessions on Cochlear Implant techniques and facial nerve decompression.

  • Expert Synergy: Faculty from AIIMS Delhi, AIIMS Bilaspur, and GMC Jammu joined forces to mentor the next generation of otologic surgeons.

Leadership Perspectives

The event was inaugurated by Prof (Dr) D. N. Sharma, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu. During his address, he underscored that skill-based initiatives are the backbone of improved patient outcomes.

“Structured hands-on training ultimately translates into safer procedures, improved surgical outcomes, and better patient care.” — Prof (Dr) D. N. Sharma

Prof (Dr) Meeta Gupta, Dean Academics, further highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, noting the seamless coordination between the ENT and Anatomy departments.

The Faces Behind the Initiative

The program was executed under the leadership of a specialized academic team:

  • Course Director: Dr. Darwin Kaushal (Additional Professor, ENT)

  • Organizing Lead: Dr. Amardeep Singh (Associate Professor, ENT)

  • Anatomical Lead: Dr. Shalika Sharma (Additional Professor, Anatomy)

Dr. Darwin Kaushal noted that the workshop wasn’t just about technical skill—it was about strengthening academic collaborations between India’s premier medical institutions.

Impact: Why This Matters for the Common Man

For patients, particularly in rural populations and among children, this training means:

  1. Reduced Surgical Risk: Surgeons gain confidence on cadavers before operating on live patients.

  2. Precision Care: Enhanced understanding of complex anatomy leads to better hearing restoration and fewer complications.

  3. Accessibility: By training more surgeons in advanced techniques like Cochlear Implants, AIIMS Jammu is ensuring top-tier ENT care is available locally in the region.

With this successful conference, AIIMS Jammu reinforces its standing as a national hub for specialized medical education, proving that the road to healthcare excellence is paved with continuous learning and surgical innovation.
