Cairo, January 16:
A senior commander in the armed wing of Hamas, Mohammed Al-Holy, was reportedly killed today in an Israeli airstrike in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza Strip. A Hamas source confirmed Al-Holy’s death, stating he was among seven people, including a 16-year-old, who perished in a pair of targeted strikes.
Neither the Israeli military nor Hamas have yet commented on the incident, which marks a significant escalation in the already volatile region. The deaths come as a fragile ceasefire, initiated in October, continues to crumble, with over 400 Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers reported killed since its implementation.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, with much of the territory in ruins following extensive Israeli military operations. More than half of Gaza has been razed, and nearly all of its over 2 million inhabitants are now displaced, living in makeshift homes or damaged structures within a constrained area. This narrow strip is where Israeli forces have recently withdrawn, allowing Hamas to reassert its control.
Concerns for the civilian population are mounting, particularly for children. The United Nations children’s agency reported on Tuesday that over 100 children have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire, with some falling victim to drone and quadcopter attacks.
Despite the United States announcing a second phase of the ceasefire on Wednesday, both Israel and Hamas remain deeply entrenched in their positions, trading accusations of ceasefire violations. The current conflict stems from an October 2023 attack by Hamas-led fighters that killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli tallies. In response, Israel’s assault on Gaza has claimed 71,000 lives, according to health authorities in the strip, and devastated the region.
