Jammu:

In a monumental step toward reclaiming Jammu and Kashmir’s ancient educational glory, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today to establish the “Shri Narsingh Dev Sanskrit Gurukul” at the historic Shri Narsingh Dham Mandir in Ghagwal.

This initiative aims to revive the Vedic learning tradition at the 1,700-year-old temple, which historically served as a premier center for Sanskrit grammar, philosophy, and Vedic scriptures before its educational role faded over the centuries.

A Fusion of Ancient Wisdom and Modern Education

The Gurukul is the result of a strategic partnership between the Shri Narsingh Dham Mandir Management Committee and the renowned Churamani Sanskrit Sansthan, Basohli.

In a move aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the institution will not just focus on traditional rote learning. Instead, it will offer a residential Vedic-cum-modern education model, ensuring that students are well-versed in ancient wisdom while staying competitive in the contemporary academic world.

Key Highlights of the MoU:

  • Affiliation: The Gurukul will be supported by Churamani Sanskrit Sansthan, which is affiliated with the Central Sanskrit University, New Delhi.

  • Hand-holding Phase: The Basohli-based Sansthan will provide expert guidance for an initial 2-3 year period.

  • Inaugural Session: The first academic batch is expected to commence in March-April 2026.

The Historic Significance

While the Shri Narsingh Dev Mandir has remained a spiritual powerhouse—drawing thousands for the Rathkhada Mela and Shri Krishna Janmashtami—the revival of its Gurukul marks the return of its “Teaching Soul.”

“This is a significant step towards rekindling the temple’s ancient role as a beacon of learning,” officials noted during the signing ceremony.

The Signing Ceremony

The MoU was signed by Sh. K.S. Bali (SDM Ghagwal) and Dr. Soumya Ranjan (Principal, Churamani Sanskrit Sansthan). The event was graced by several high-ranking officials and dignitaries, including:

  • Sh. Shakti Kumar Pathak, IPS (Director ACB J&K and Chief Trustee, Churamani Sanskrit Sansthan)

  • Ms. Ayushi Sudan, IAS (DC Samba and Chairperson of the Temple Management Committee)

  • Sh. Jagdish Singh (ADC Samba)

  • Sh. Suresh Kumar Falli (DDC Ghagwal)

What This Means for the Region

For the people of Ghagwal and the larger Samba district, this Gurukul represents more than just a school; it is a cultural restoration. By integrating moral sciences and Vedic philosophy into a modern framework, the Gurukul aims to produce a new generation of scholars who are rooted in Indian heritage yet ready for the global stage.
