Jammu, September 12: AIIMS Jammu has achieved a significant milestone in advanced vascular surgical care with the successful completion of its first carotid endarterectomy, a complex procedure used to treat severe narrowing of the arteries supplying blood to the brain.
The landmark procedure was performed by the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) on a 69-year-old male patient diagnosed with 90 per cent stenosis of the right internal carotid artery. The patient also had a previous history of middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction with seizures, requiring careful neurological and vascular assessment.
Considering the severity of the carotid artery narrowing and the patient’s clinical history, the patient was evaluated and subsequently taken up for carotid endarterectomy.
During the procedure, surgeons meticulously exposed the carotid vessels and removed the obstructive atherosclerotic plaque from the right internal carotid artery, thereby improving blood flow through the affected vessel.
The complex procedure required detailed preoperative assessment, precise surgical technique, careful anaesthetic management and close postoperative neurological monitoring.
Carotid endarterectomy is an established surgical treatment for significant carotid artery stenosis, a condition in which atherosclerotic plaque narrows the arteries supplying blood to the brain. Severe carotid artery disease can increase the risk of transient ischaemic attacks and ischaemic stroke.
The procedure was performed under the leadership of Dr. Sartaj Ahmad Guroo, Associate Professor and Officiating Head, Department of CTVS, AIIMS Jammu.
The successful surgery involved close coordination between the CTVS, Anaesthesia, Neurosurgery and ENT teams, along with Operation Theatre personnel, Nursing Officers, Technicians and other supporting staff.
Following the surgery, the patient made a satisfactory postoperative recovery and was discharged in stable condition.

He said the successful completion of the institute’s first carotid endarterectomy was an important step towards strengthening advanced vascular surgical services at AIIMS Jammu. He highlighted the institute’s growing clinical capabilities and multidisciplinary expertise, adding that efforts would continue to expand specialised services so that patients could access complex treatments closer to home.
The achievement marks another step in the development of the CTVS Department at AIIMS Jammu and strengthens the institute’s capacity to undertake complex vascular, thoracic and cardiac procedures.
With the availability of carotid endarterectomy at the institute, appropriately selected patients from Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining regions can now access this specialised surgical treatment closer to home, potentially reducing the need to travel to distant tertiary-care centres.
