Omar Abdullah

SRINAGAR, SEPT 26: National Conference (NC) Vice President Omar Abdullah on Thursday attributed the low voter turnout in Srinagar to the central government’s approach of equating high poll participation with normalcy in the region.

Speaking to reporters, Omar Abdullah said the voter turnout in the second phase of elections was lower than expected. “I believe the central government is to blame for this. They have been comparing high voter turnout with the return of normalcy and linking it to the abrogation of Article 370. I think this low turnout is a reaction to that in Srinagar,” he said.

Looking ahead to the third phase of elections, Omar expressed hope for higher voter participation, particularly in Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara, where people have voted in difficult circumstances. “We expect a good turnout this time and anticipate strong support for NC and Congress candidates,” he added.
