Srinagar, April 4:

In a landmark move to transform the economic landscape of the Kashmir Valley, the Northern Railway’s Jammu Division has partnered with local stakeholders to fast-track the region’s fruit and parcel trade. A high-level meeting held on Friday in Srinagar focused on making the rail network the primary, cost-effective artery for Kashmir’s world-famous produce.

Strategic Shift: Rail over Road

The core objective of the roadmap is to position the railway as a time-bound and reliable alternative to traditional road transport. This is particularly crucial for “perishable” goods like cherries and apples, which require rapid transit to maintain quality.

  • Key Focus: Establishing a seamless supply chain from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.

  • Cost-Efficiency: Introduction of competitive freight rates and special concession schemes for bulk bookings via cargo aggregators.

  • Capacity Building: Plans are underway to upgrade loading facilities at three major hubs: Badgam, Srinagar, and Pampore railway stations.

The “Rapid Cargo” Advantage

A major highlight of the discussion was the JPP-RCS (Joint Parcel Product-Rapid Cargo Service), a dedicated parcel train designed for speed.

Feature Details
Departure Badgam (Central Kashmir) at 6:15 AM
Route Via Bari Brahmana and Ambala Cantonment
Arrival Adarsh Nagar (Delhi) at 5:30 AM (Next Day)
Turnaround Delivery in under 24 hours

Empowering Small-Scale Traders

To ensure that the benefits of the rail link reach everyone, not just large-scale exporters, the Railways reached a consensus to work with cargo aggregators.

  • Consolidation: Small-scale farmers can now pool their produce (smaller parcel loads) to be transported efficiently as a single bulk shipment.

  • Global Identity: Senior DCM Jammu, Uchit Singhal, emphasized that the Railways is a partner in the region’s prosperity, helping Kashmiri products reach global markets more effectively.

Infrastructure & Incentives

The Railway administration is currently reviewing proposals to further incentivize the shift to rail:

  1. Special Concessions: For aggregators who commit to high-volume bookings.

  2. Streamlined Logistics: Ensuring “zero-delay” movement from the orchards of the Valley to the markets of the National Capital and beyond.

“Railways is not merely a mode of transport, but a partner in the economic prosperity of this region,” stated Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu.
