Jammu, Feb 17:

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly paused its official proceedings on Tuesday to honor the memory of two distinguished public figures. In a solemn atmosphere, the House paid high tributes to former Minister Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad Shah and former MLC Brij Mohan Sharma, recognizing their lifelong dedication to the service of the people.

Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad Shah: A Legacy of Administrative Excellence

Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Abdul Rahim Rather, moved the obituary references, describing Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad Shah as an “able administrator” with a remarkable career that spanned several decades.

Key Highlights of His Career:

  • Political Stints: Served as a Minister in various governments headed by former Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah.

  • Electoral Success: First elected from the Devsar Constituency in 1983, with subsequent re-elections in 1987 and 1996.

  • Parliamentary Roles: Contributed significantly as a member of the Public Accounts Committee, Public Undertakings Committee, and Committee on Estimates.

  • Social Contributions: Held vital positions in the State Transport Authority and the Muslim Auqaf Trust.

The Speaker emphasized that Peerzada was widely respected for his integrity and his unwavering commitment to the development of both his constituency and the Union Territory.

Brij Mohan Sharma: A Model of Discipline and Humility

The House also mourned the loss of former MLC Brij Mohan Sharma. Speaker Rather recalled him as a “humble and disciplined human being” who remained deeply connected to his roots throughout his tenure in the erstwhile Legislative Council (2001–2007).

“He performed his service purely for the sake of public welfare, without expecting any reward from anyone,” the Speaker noted, highlighting Sharma’s selfless approach to governance.

A Moment of Silence

Following the tributes from the Speaker and various members of the House, the Legislative Assembly observed two minutes of silence as a mark of respect for the departed souls. The leaders across party lines stood in unison, reflecting the deep impact both Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad Shah and Brij Mohan Sharma had on the political and social fabric of Jammu and Kashmir.
