Jammu, January 12:
The Special Crime Wing (SCW) of the Jammu Crime Branch has cracked down on a local couple accused of defrauding a job seeker of ₹9 lakh under the guise of providing employment.
Following a detailed preliminary inquiry, a formal case has been registered against Ajay Gupta and his wife Anshu Gupta, residents of Sarwal, Jammu.
The Anatomy of the Scam
The investigation began after a formal complaint was lodged detailing a calculated web of deception. According to Sh. Sanjay Parihar, SSP SCW Jammu, the accused allegedly used “fraudulent and dishonest inducement” to convince the victim they could secure a suitable job in exchange for a substantial payment.
The victim reportedly paid the sum of ₹9,00,000 through multiple channels:
-
₹3,50,000: Transferred to Anshu Gupta’s bank account.
-
₹2,00,000: Transferred to Ajay Gupta’s bank account.
-
₹3,50,000: Handed over in liquid cash.
Broken Promises and Dishonoured Cheques
As months passed without any job offer materializing, the accused allegedly began stalling. In an attempt to pacify the victim, the couple issued two security cheques—one for ₹2 lakh and another for ₹7 lakh.
The situation escalated when the victim attempted to encash these cheques, only for both to be dishonoured by the bank. Despite repeated pleas for a refund, the couple refused to return the money, leading the victim to seek legal intervention.
Legal Action and Charges
The SCW’s preliminary verification confirmed that the duo acted with “criminal intent from the very inception.” A case has now been registered at the Special Crime Wing Police Station, Jammu, under the following sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS):
-
Section 318(4): Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.
-
Section 61(2): Criminal conspiracy.
The investigation is currently being led by Inspector Kali Charan.
“I appeal to the general public to remain cautious and aware of such fraudsters and their tempting offers. Do not fall prey to promises of employment in exchange for money.” — Sh. Sanjay Parihar, SSP SCW Jammu.
