New Delhi, May 22:
In a significant move to ramp up political activity in Jammu and Kashmir, Asha Chandan, Vice President of the J&K Congress Women’s Wing, met with All India Mahila Congress President Alka Lamba in the national capital to discuss a range of critical issues confronting the Union Territory.
The high-profile meeting focused heavily on the restoration of democratic processes, economic distress, and women-centric challenges in the region.
Key Democratic and Local Body Elections on the Agenda
During the deliberations, Chandan emphasized the urgent need for holding long-overdue local elections to restore grassroots governance. The discussions highlighted preparation and strategies for three major upcoming polls:
-
Panchayat Elections: Strengthening governance at the village level.
-
Municipal Corporation Elections: Addressing urban administration and infrastructure.
-
Urban Local Body (ULB) Polls: Ensuring civic representation across towns.
Both leaders agreed that empowering local bodies is crucial to addressing the daily grievances of citizens who currently feel disconnected from the administration.
Direct Focus on Statehood and Unemployment
The leaders did not shy away from the core political and economic challenges gripping Jammu and Kashmir. Chandan briefed the national leadership on the growing anxiety among the youth regarding the lack of job opportunities.
“Unemployment in Jammu and Kashmir has reached critical levels, leaving our educated youth stranded. Alongside this economic crisis, the delay in restoring full Statehood remains a central grievance that must be addressed immediately,” Chandan reportedly conveyed during the meeting.
Championing Women’s Issues
As representatives of the party’s women’s wing, a major portion of the dialogue was dedicated to the specific socio-economic struggles faced by women in J&K.
The leaders discussed creating better safety nets, enhancing financial independence opportunities, and ensuring that women have a stronger voice in the upcoming electoral battles. Alka Lamba assured full support from the central leadership to strengthen the women’s wing on the ground in Jammu and Kashmir.
