Jammu, January 12:

In a significant boost to India’s educational and mental health landscape, Dr. Romesh Kumar, Head of Department at DIET Jammu, has achieved global recognition for his pioneering work. His book, Happy Schools: Placing Happiness at the Heart of Schools, has been named one of the “Favorite Books for Educators in 2025” by the Greater Good Science Center (GGSC) at the University of California, Berkeley.

The recognition is a landmark achievement, as Happy Schools is the only Indian title to feature on this prestigious international list, which typically highlights research-based works from across the globe that advance well-being and compassion in education.

A Timeless Framework for Student Well-being

Described by UC Berkeley editors as “thought-provoking, inspirational, and practical,” Dr. Kumar’s work offers a roadmap for moving beyond academic pressure to focus on the emotional safety of students.

The book’s inclusion at the top of the 2025 list underscores its growing international relevance, especially as schools globally grapple with rising stress levels and mental health challenges among youth.

Aligning with Supreme Court Guidelines

The global accolade comes at a critical juncture for Indian education. In July 2025, the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India issued landmark guidelines mandating that all educational institutions prioritize student mental health.

Dr. Kumar’s framework directly supports these directives, which emphasize:

  • Preventive Support: Creating environments that reduce the risk of distress.

  • Promotive Well-being: Actively teaching happiness and resilience.

  • School-based Interventions: Moving mental health support from the hospital to the classroom.

The Architect Behind the Work

Dr. Romesh Kumar is a seasoned psychologist and a key figure in the Jammu and Kashmir education department.

  • Current Roles: HOD at DIET Jammu and Divisional Nodal Officer for Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS).

  • Affiliations: Member of the American Psychological Association (APA).

  • Impact: He has been instrumental in building teacher capacity and establishing “Counseling Cells” across the region to support students.

“The 2025 list highlights hopeful, research-based books that promote well-being, connection, and the everyday transformative impact of educators.” — Vicki Zakrzewski, Education Director at UC Berkeley’s GGSC

Dr. Kumar, reaffirming his commitment, stated that he will continue to advocate for a holistic approach where happiness is treated as a core pillar of the education system, rather than an afterthought.
