Jammu, January 28:

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu celebrated India’s 77th Republic Day with a profound sense of patriotism and reflection. The ceremony, held at the institute’s permanent campus in Vijaypur, was highlighted by a thought-provoking address from Prof. (Dr.) D. N. Sharma, Executive Director & CEO, who urged the medical community to view professional integrity as the ultimate form of nation-building.

Honoring the Legacy of Sacrifice

Addressing the gathering of faculty, staff, and students, Prof. Sharma reflected on the long struggle for independence. He emphasized that the freedoms enjoyed today are not merely historical milestones but the direct result of the “supreme sacrifices of innumerable martyrs.”

“It is because of those who laid down their lives that we breathe freely today. Our duty is to preserve this hard-earned freedom through discipline, adherence to rules, and by safeguarding the sanctity of our Constitution.”

Spotlight on the ‘Unsung Heroes’

A significant portion of the address was dedicated to the “unsung heroes” of the freedom struggle. Prof. Sharma specifically recounted the story of Batukeshwar Dutt, a close associate of Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

  • The Historic Act: He recalled the 1929 incident in the Central Legislative Assembly where non-lethal bombs were used to “awaken the conscience of the nation.”

  • The AIIMS Connection: In a touching revelation, Prof. Sharma shared that Batukeshwar Dutt was treated at AIIMS Delhi in his later years. He noted that the doctors who cared for him felt “extremely fortunate and proud” to serve such a distinguished patriot.

Healthcare as Patriotism

Redefining the scope of national service, Prof. Sharma stated that patriotism is not exclusive to those guarding the borders. He highlighted the vital role of healthcare professionals in strengthening the nation’s fabric.

Key Takeaways from the Address:

  • Nation Building: Professionals at institutions like AIIMS contribute by safeguarding the health and dignity of the citizenry.

  • Core Values: The Indian Constitution stands on equality, justice, and duty—values that must guide every medical professional.

  • Professional Loyalty: Honesty and diligence in one’s chosen field—whether as a doctor or teacher—is the highest form of service to the country.

A Renewed Commitment

The event concluded with a shared pledge among the AIIMS Jammu fraternity to uphold constitutional values and serve the region with sincerity and compassion. The patriotic fervor was evident as the National Flag was unfurled, marking another year of the institute’s commitment to excellence in healthcare and national duty.
