Kathua, August 24: J&K Police Kathua has intensified its crackdown on the illicit liquor trade, destroying around 500 litres of Lahan and seizing approximately 20 litres of illicit desi liquor during raids conducted in different areas of the district.

The action was carried out under the overall supervision of SSP Kathua Mohita Sharma, IPS, in the jurisdiction of Police Post Nagri and Out Post Ghatti of Police Station Kathua.

In the first action on August 23, police received reliable information that Tarlok Chand, son of Chaman Lal, a resident of Chack Drab, Kathua, was allegedly involved in selling illicit liquor near Tarnah.

A police team led by the In-Charge Police Post Nagri, under the supervision of senior officers, conducted a raid and recovered around 20 litres of illicit desi liquor from his possession. The accused was arrested on the spot and the liquor was seized.

Police said a case has been registered under FIR No. 415/2026 under Section 48(a) of the Excise Act at Police Station Kathua, and further investigation is underway.

Meanwhile, another police team led by the In-Charge Out Post Ghatti conducted a patrol in the Ghatti area and destroyed approximately 500 litres of Lahan, along with material and containers allegedly being used for the manufacture of illicit liquor.

SSP Kathua Mohita Sharma said police are taking strong measures to curb the menace of illicit liquor and drugs in the district. She warned that strict legal action would be taken against those involved in the illegal trade and said similar raids would continue in identified areas.

Police have also appealed to the public to share information regarding illicit activities by contacting 112 or 9858034100.
