JAMMU, MAR 14: Labour Commissioner Jammu & Kashmir, Charandeep Singh, on Friday held an interactive meeting with representatives of various trade unions from the Jammu division at Shram Bhawan. The session focused on labour welfare, compliance with regulations, and strengthening trade unions through structured governance.

As per the statement issued to The Newsroom 24 – Awaz, during the discussion, trade union representatives highlighted their concerns and challenges, seeking the Labour Commissioner’s intervention. The session provided an opportunity for constructive dialogue between the authorities and union representatives.

Taking a firm stance on non-compliant unions, the Labour Commissioner warned that trade unions failing to submit Annual Returns would face cancellation of registration and be served with notices. He urged unions to maintain proper records, adhere to their by-laws, protect members’ rights, and conduct timely elections, ensuring transparency and efficiency.

As the Registrar of Trade Unions in J&K under the Trade Unions Act, 1926, he stressed the legal obligation of unions to submit Annual Returns under Section 28 of the Act. These returns, covering the period from January 1 to December 31, must be submitted by July 31 each year in Form D. Compliance with this rule is necessary to ensure accountability and maintain legal status.

Some union representatives raised concerns about difficulties in submitting Annual Returns online through the Single Window JK platform. The Labour Commissioner assured them that their genuine concerns would be addressed and workshop sessions would be conducted to enhance awareness about the online submission process.

The trade union representatives expressed their appreciation for the first-of-its-kind interactive session, which allowed them to voice concerns and collaborate on labour welfare initiatives.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Labour Commissioner Jammu, Assistant Labour Commissioners from multiple districts, and representatives from various trade unions, including Taxi Operators Union, Railway Station Jammu; Nirman Mazdoor Union, Jammu; Construction Workers and Labour Union, Kishtwar; Sumo Van and Taxi Operators Association, Katra Reasi; and Border Road Casual Paid Workers Union J&K, Kathua.
