J&K High Court

SRINAGAR, FEB 19: In a significant legal development, the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has quashed the Public Safety Act (PSA) detention order against journalist Majid Hyderi.

Justice V K Chatterjee annulled the detention order after hearing arguments presented by advocate Mohammad Yousuf Bhat, who represented Hyderi.

Hyderi was arrested in September 2023 on charges of extortion and defamation and subsequently booked under the PSA. He was lodged at Kot Bhalwal Jail in Jammu following his arrest.

The court’s decision has been seen as a significant relief for the journalist, who had been in detention for nearly five months.

In a separate case, the High Court dismissed a petition filed by advocate Mian Abdul Qayoom, who had challenged his own detention under the PSA. Qayoom was arrested in December 2023 in connection with the 2020 murder of advocate Babar Qadri by terrorists.
