Bovine Smuggling

JAMMU, FEB 18: In a sustained operation against bovine smuggling, Jammu & Kashmir Police carried out a year-long crackdown under Operation Kamdhenu, leading to the arrest of 425 smugglers, rescue of 3,434 animals, and seizure of 360 vehicles used in illegal transportation from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024.

As per the statement issued to The Newsroom 24 – Awaz, police stations across Jammu District played a key role in executing targeted operations. Personnel from Nagrota, Jhajjar Kotli, Domana, Akhnoor, Kanachak, Khour, Pacca Danga, Satwari, Bishnah, R.S. Pura, and other sub-divisional units intercepted smugglers and dismantled their networks through surprise checkpoints, highway surveillance, and night-long monitoring.

Bovine smuggling remains a challenge, with smugglers using unauthorized routes, forging transportation permits, and adopting new tactics to evade law enforcement. To counter this, Jammu Police strengthened intelligence-sharing mechanisms, improved inter-district coordination, and deployed special teams at vulnerable points. Collaboration with local communities also played a crucial role, as residents actively reported suspicious movements, enabling swift police action.

Several high-profile smugglers were apprehended, and legal proceedings under relevant sections of the law were initiated against them. The seized vehicles, often modified for illegal transport, were impounded as part of deterrence measures.

Jammu Police reiterated that bovine smuggling violates the law and poses risks to animal welfare, road safety, and communal harmony. With intelligence-led policing and enhanced patrolling, the department remains committed to eradicating this menace.

The crackdown is set to intensify in the coming months, with increased night patrols, stricter highway monitoring, and rapid-response teams deployed at critical junctions Jammu Police urges the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to the nearest police station, emphasizing that citizen cooperation is crucial in maintaining law and order.
