JAMMU, FEB 06: The Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) on Wednesday issued a clarification regarding recent media reports labeling an incident in Phallian Mandal of Jammu district as a “gang war,” calling such claims misleading and inaccurate.
As per rebuttal issued to media, the Police stated that the incident, which occurred on February 4, 2025, around 6:10 PM, involved a group of individuals from one party firing shots in the air to intimidate the other group. Additionally, some parked vehicles were damaged using wooden sticks. Initial investigations have revealed that the dispute stemmed from a common interest in immovable property dealings rather than any organized gang-related violence.
Taking cognizance of the matter, FIR No. 23/2025 has been registered at Police Station Satwari under Section 109(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 3/4/25 of the Arms Act. The investigation is currently underway.
Police urged media outlets to refrain from sensationalizing incidents involving violent altercations and linking them to gang wars. Officials emphasized that such misreporting could create unnecessary panic and disturb the otherwise peaceful atmosphere of the region.
“As the fourth pillar of democracy, the media plays a crucial role in shaping public perception and maintaining societal harmony. We urge all media houses to ensure factual accuracy before reporting sensitive matters,” the rebuttal read.
Police has also requested media personnel to verify facts and seek official statements before publishing or broadcasting reports on such incidents to prevent misinformation.
