JAMMU, OCT 18: In a significant medical milestone, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu successfully performed its first femoro-popliteal bypass surgery, marking a breakthrough for patients suffering from Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) in the region. The procedure, conducted by the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), underscores AIIMS Jammu’s growing role as a leader in advanced medical care.

The surgery was led by a specialized team under the guidance of Prof. Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu. The CTVS team, headed by Dr. Sartaj Ahmad Guroo, collaborated with Dr. Parvez from the Department of Trauma & Emergency Medicine. The Anaesthesia team, led by Dr. Shruti and Dr. Sandeepika, played a crucial role in the procedure.

Peripheral Vascular Disease, characterized by the narrowing or blockage of arteries in the limbs, is a serious condition that, if left untreated, can lead to reduced mobility, chronic pain, and even limb amputation. The femoro-popliteal bypass surgery reroutes blood flow around blocked sections of the femoral or popliteal artery, offering a highly effective solution for advanced cases of PVD. This surgery significantly improves patients’ quality of life by alleviating pain and preventing the need for amputation.

Prof. Shakti Kumar Gupta hailed the surgery as a landmark achievement for AIIMS Jammu, stating, “This pioneering surgery marks the beginning of a new era in advanced cardiothoracic and vascular procedures at AIIMS Vijaypur. It reflects our commitment to providing cutting-edge healthcare services to the people of Jammu and surrounding regions.”

Since its establishment in 2020, AIIMS Jammu has rapidly gained recognition as a key healthcare provider, particularly for patients who previously had limited access to advanced treatments. The introduction of procedures like the femoro-popliteal bypass enhances the institute’s capacity to offer specialized care, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for complex surgeries.

The success of the surgery was made possible by the collaborative efforts of the CTVS department, the Anaesthesia team, and critical care specialists. Following the procedure, the team expressed gratitude to the AIIMS administration for its continued investment in medical advancements and state-of-the-art equipment. “We are fortunate to have leadership that believes in advancing healthcare capabilities and supporting our surgical endeavors,” the team said in a statement.
