JAMMU, NOV 08: Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) on Friday organized a landmark One-Day Conference on “Urban Policing” at the Conference Hall, District Police Lines (DPL) Jammu. The initiative, held in compliance with directives from the DGP’s/IGP’s Conference, sought to develop smarter strategies for smarter cities, with an emphasis on leveraging technology and modern practices to address the unique challenges of urban law enforcement.
As per the release issued here, the conference saw participation from a broad spectrum of police officers, including DIG JSK Range Shiv Kumar Sharma (IPS), SSP Jammu Joginder Singh (JKPS), SSP Traffic City Faisal Qureshi (JKPS), zonal SSP of Jammu District, and other senior officials such as SP PC Jammu, SDPOs, DySP Hq Jammu, and DySP PC Jammu.
Prominent citizens, representatives from the Chamber of Commerce Jammu, members of the media, academicians, law students from Jammu University, and officers from the civil administration, including ADC L&O Jammu, Secretary JDA, Secretary JMC, and the Superintendent of Police Hospital, were also in attendance.
In his opening remarks, DIG JSK Range Shiv Kumar Sharma underscored the importance of smarter policing for smarter cities, highlighting the pivotal role of the Jammu Police in organizing a comprehensive forum dedicated to this theme. He emphasized the integration of advanced technologies such as CCTV networks and Command and Control Centers for effective crime prevention and control.
The conference featured a range of thought-provoking discussions and expert speeches from distinguished speakers, including SDPO Gandhinagar Kartik Shrotriya (IPS), retired Sessions Judge Subash Gupta, President of the Chamber of Commerce Arun Gupta, Professor Navdeep Kaur from the Law Department at Jammu University, Secretary JDA Vishwajeet Singh, Secretary JMC Chand Singh, and DySP Traffic City North Farah Nishat.
During his address, SDPO Gandhinagar Kartik Shrotriya provided a detailed overview of various aspects of urban policing, including challenges, progress, and best practices, with a special focus on models such as the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS). He advocated for adopting modern urban policing models tailored to the unique needs of Jammu and Kashmir.
Key topics discussed during the conference included land and sand mafias, traffic management, terrorism, and the need for modernized police stations. Speakers proposed several innovative solutions to improve urban policing, such as:
- Installation of CCTV cameras at critical locations, including bus stands, vital road links, railway stations, inter-district and interstate road links, and public places.
- Minimizing human intervention through advanced technologies like Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS).
- Equipping police stations with the latest gadgetry, weaponry, and forensic science capabilities to address urban-specific challenges.
- The creation of a distinct urban police model to meet the specific demands of urban centers.
- Entrusting road accident investigations to specialized traffic police stations.
In his concluding remarks, SSP Jammu Joginder Singh (JKPS) acknowledged the evolving nature of urban crime and stressed the importance of proactive measures and continuous innovation in policing strategies. He highlighted the technological gap between law enforcement and criminal activities, advocating for adaptation and modernization. SSP Singh also underscored the value of such conferences, conducted under Government of India directives, as crucial platforms for developing actionable recommendations for policymakers.
Following the conclusion of the conference, SSP Jammu delivered a detailed presentation on “Managing Border Security and Cross-Border Crimes,” attended by DIG JSK Range, zonal SsP of Jammu District, SDPOs, DySPs, SHOs, and other officers.
