UDHAMPUR, AUGUST 24: The Army Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA) on Monday celebrated its Diamond Jubilee at Udhampur, marking 60 years of dedicated service towards the welfare, empowerment and well-being of women, children and families associated with the Defence Forces.
The milestone celebration highlighted AWWA’s continued efforts to support families, particularly those living in challenging and far-flung areas of the Northern Command, where military personnel often remain separated from their families due to operational commitments.
As part of its welfare initiatives, AWWA has undertaken Project Milaap to strengthen communication with families residing in remote areas. The initiative aims to ensure that families remain connected and receive timely information about welfare measures, support schemes and other assistance through digital means.
A special focus of the celebrations was on Veer Naris and Veer Matas, whose courage, dignity and resilience were acknowledged and honoured. Veer Naris and Veer Matas from Udhampur and adjoining far-flung areas were felicitated during the event as part of AWWA’s continued efforts to support their well-being, dignity and self-reliance.
Over the past six decades, AWWA has expanded its focus beyond family welfare to include education, skill development, entrepreneurship and financial independence. In the Northern Command, 18 Vocational Training Centres and six Army Skill Training Centres are providing women with opportunities to acquire practical skills and explore avenues for employment and self-reliance.
AWWA has also placed emphasis on the education and holistic development of children, focusing not only on academics but also on confidence-building, personality development and overall growth. Healthcare, counselling and other support initiatives form an important part of its efforts towards the physical and mental well-being of defence families.
The celebrations culminated in a grand programme at Chinar Complex, Udhampur, where Mrs. Shinei Sharma, Regional President AWWA, presented the Polaris Awards to outstanding beneficiaries. She also urged members to continue contributing towards community welfare and nation-building.
The Diamond Jubilee milestone was described as more than a celebration of AWWA’s six-decade journey, representing a reaffirmation of its vision for the future—creating greater opportunities for women to learn, grow and become self-reliant while ensuring continued care and support for families and children of the Defence Forces community.
As AWWA enters its next chapter, it continues to focus on empowering women, strengthening families and expanding welfare initiatives across the Northern Command with the spirit of care, service and community support.
