Jammu, May 3:

In a major push to strengthen community policing and dismantle the network of narco-terror along the border, the Poonch Police carried out an extensive public outreach programme in the remote and sensitive areas of Sabjian, Gagrian, and Gali Maidan today.

The high-level police team was led by newly appointed Dr. Ajay Sharma (JKPS), Additional Superintendent of Police, Poonch. He was accompanied by SHO Mandi, Inspector N.K. Thakur, and In-Charge Police Post Sawjian, PSI Azhar.

Strengthening the 100-Day ‘Nasha Mukt Abhiyan’

During the visit, police officers held detailed interactive sessions with the local residents of these border villages. Dr. Ajay Sharma highlighted the ongoing 100 Days Nasha Mukt Abhiyan, an anti-drug initiative launched by the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor’s administration.

“Drug abuse is not just a health hazard; it is a serious threat to the very fabric of our society, particularly targeting our youth. We urge the community to step forward, raise awareness, and work hand-in-hand with law enforcement to wipe out this menace entirely,” Dr. Sharma said while addressing a large public gathering.

LoC Residents as the “Eyes and Ears” Against Narco-Terror

Given the strategic location of the Sabjian and Gagrian areas—situated right next to the Line of Control (LoC) fence—security was a core theme of the outreach. Dr. Sharma underlined the critical role the public plays in securing the nation’s borders.

The key points emphasized by the police leadership during the security review included:

  • Community First Line of Defence: Local residents act as the immediate “eyes and ears” of the police against anti-social and anti-national elements.

  • Tackling Narco-Terror: Border communities are essential in preventing the cross-border smuggling of contraband linked to terror funding.

  • Information Sharing: Direct lines of communication were established, and official phone numbers were exchanged for the immediate reporting of any suspicious movement or activities.

Public Welcomes Outreach, Raises Welfare Concerns

The local residents expressed their gratitude to the newly appointed Addl. SP and the visiting officers for reaching out to the far-flung areas of the district. During the interactive session, villagers raised several issues pertaining to public welfare, basic infrastructure, and local security.

The visiting police officers assured the community that all legitimate concerns would be taken up on top priority.

The visit, conducted on the directions of senior police officials, successfully concluded with a unified pledge by the police and civil society members to collaborate closely for a safer, drug-free, and highly secure Jammu and Kashmir.
