Jammu:

In a major victory for the rule of law, the Jammu Police (South Zone) has successfully tracked down and arrested a murder accused who had been evading justice for nearly a decade.

The accused, identified as Ramesh Kumar, was apprehended in South Delhi where he had been living under the false identity of “Rajbeer Singh.” The arrest marks the conclusion of a relentless 9-year manhunt for the man allegedly responsible for the brutal 2016 killing of a 12-year-old girl.

The Tragic Backstory

The case dates back to July 27, 2016. According to the police, a complaint was filed by Naresh Singh of Rani Talab, Jammu, stating that the accused had brutally assaulted his young daughter, Nisha. The 12-year-old victim later succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.

While a case (FIR No. 176/2016) was registered under sections 302 (murder) and 342 (wrongful confinement) of the RPC at PS Gandhi Nagar, the accused managed to vanish shortly after the incident.

Mission Mode: The Breakthrough

Despite the years that passed, the case was never moved to the “back burner.” Under the direction of SSP Jammu and SP South, a specialized team led by PSI Shubham Sharma (IC PP Digiana) was tasked with a mission-mode investigation.

Using a combination of technical surveillance and human intelligence, the team traced the suspect to the Bhati Mines area in South Delhi. Working in coordination with the Delhi Police, the Jammu team conducted a high-stakes search operation to secure the arrest.

“Justice is delivered irrespective of the time elapsed,” stated SP South during a press conference at PS Gandhi Nagar. “The safety and security of public life remains our top priority.”

Beyond the Murder Case: A Crackdown on Crime

During the briefing, SP South also highlighted the massive success of two major ongoing operations in the South Zone during the first 67 days of 2026:

Operation Sanjeevani (Anti-Narcotics)

  • FIRs Registered: 23

  • Arrests: 33 individuals

  • Recovery: 691.8 grams of Heroin

  • Market Value: Estimated at ₹2.5 Crore.

Operation Avtaar (Anti-Vehicle Theft)

The police successfully dismantled an interstate vehicle theft network.

  • Recoveries: 23 stolen vehicles recovered in just over two months.

  • Impact: The arrest of key kingpins has significantly disrupted organized theft rackets in the region.

The accused, Ramesh Kumar, has been brought back to Jammu and produced before the Hon’ble Court. The police have sought remand for further investigation to uncover the full details of his time in hiding and any potential accomplices.
