Srinagar, Feb 16:
Continuing its offensive against those plundering natural resources, the J&K Police on Monday successfully foiled a timber smuggling bid in the Goigam area of Baramulla. A significant quantity of illicit forest timber was recovered during a swift raid, leading to the arrest of one local resident.
The Raid at Goigam
Based on specific and reliable intelligence regarding the illegal movement of forest produce, a specialized police team was dispatched to the Goigam area. During a targeted search operation, officers intercepted and recovered a substantial consignment of processed timber that had been illegally extracted from nearby forests.

Window Frames: 38 units (Size: 4 × 1½ feet)

Large Planks: 03 units (Size: 5 × 5 inches)

Supporting Planks: 04 units (Size: 1½ × 5 inches)
Accused Taken into Custody
The illicit timber was recovered from the possession of Khurshheed Ahmad Khan, son of Ab. Ghani Khan and a resident of Goigam.
The police have officially registered Case FIR No. 13/2026 under the relevant sections of the law at Police Station Kunzer. A thorough investigation has been initiated to identify if a larger smuggling ring is active in the region.
Zero Tolerance for Environmental Crimes
The J&K Police has reiterated its commitment to protecting the Union Territory’s green cover. A spokesperson stated that strict legal action will continue against anyone involved in timber smuggling or other activities that damage the environment.
The department has also urged the public to act as “eyes and ears” for the administration and report any suspicious movement near forest areas to the nearest police station immediately.
