Srinagar, Feb 9:
Meteorologists are warning of a significantly dry February for Jammu & Kashmir, despite two weak weather systems slated to hit the region over the next week. While light precipitation is on the horizon, experts suggest it will not be enough to stave off a major seasonal rainfall deficit.
Upcoming Weather Spells
According to the latest forecasts, a series of weak Western Disturbances (WD) will pass through the Union Territory, bringing minor relief to the ongoing dry conditions:
-
February 10: A weak WD is expected to bring light rain and snow to many areas, with moderate intensity possible at a few specific locations.
-
February 14: A brief, minor spell of rain or snow may touch the higher reaches of the valley.
-
February 17: A second weak Western Disturbance is projected to affect the region around this date.
Officials have noted that they are monitoring these systems closely and will provide updates if there is any shift in track or intensity.
Concerns Over Rainfall Deficit
Despite these intermittent spells, the overall outlook for the remainder of the month remains bleak. No major rain or snowfall activity is currently visible on the horizon after February 17.
“Present forecasts indicate that February is likely to end with a significant rainfall deficit,” weather officials stated.
Environmental Impact: Early Blooming
The prolonged dry spell and lack of significant winter precipitation are already raising environmental concerns. Experts warn that these conditions could trigger early blooming of trees, a phenomenon that can leave orchards vulnerable to late-season frost and disrupt the region’s delicate agricultural cycle.
