Jammu, Jan 29:

In a major breakthrough against the rising tide of narcotics, the Jammu Police (South Zone) dismantled a local drug peddling network operating in the Gandhi Nagar area. The operation resulted in the arrest of two individuals, including a notorious history-sheeter, and the recovery of over 20 grams of heroin.

The Crackdown at Gandhi Nagar

The operation was carried out by a police party led by PSI Zubair Manzoor during a routine naka (checkpoint) checking near Karan Enterprises. Two suspicious individuals were intercepted, leading to a search that uncovered a significant quantity of “chitta” (heroin-like substance).

The arrested individuals have been identified as:

  • Sonu Randhawa: A resident of Valmiki Colony, Gandhi Nagar. Found with 13.05 grams of heroin, a digital weighing machine, cash, and a mobile phone.

  • Shanu Mattoo: Also from Valmiki Colony. Found in possession of 7.67 grams of heroin and cash.

Police also seized a vehicle (Registration No. JK02DE-3906) used by the duo to transport and distribute the contraband.

Exploiting the Youth

Initial investigations revealed a disturbing pattern. The duo was reportedly targeting local youth, selling the drug in small quantities of 1–2 grams to avoid immediate detection while fostering addiction among the younger population.

“These individuals were not just selling drugs; they were systematically endangering young lives and eroding the social fabric of our community,” a police official stated.

The total recovery of 20.72 grams of heroin is estimated to have a street market value of approximately ₹80,000.

Criminal Profiles

The arrests are particularly significant given the criminal history of the accused:

  • Sonu Randhawa is a known history-sheeter at PS Gandhi Nagar. He is currently linked to five previous FIRs ranging from 2017 to 2023, involving charges of attempt to murder (Section 307), theft, and prior NDPS Act violations.

  • Shanu Mattoo, an associate of Randhawa, was previously booked in 2021 for attempt to murder and causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapons.

Legal Action and Public Appeal

A case has been formally registered at Police Station Gandhi Nagar under FIR No. 18/2026. The charges include multiple sections of the NDPS Act (8/21/22/25/27-A/29) and Section 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The Jammu Police have reiterated their “Zero Tolerance” policy toward drug trafficking. They are urging parents and the general public to remain vigilant and share any information regarding suspicious activities to help keep Jammu drug-free.
