Jammu, Jan 17:
As a relentless winter continues to shatter long-standing temperature records across the region, HelpAge India stepped forward today to provide a much-needed shield against the chill.
The organization hosted a “Free Blanket Distribution Camp” at Apnavan, Suray Chak, targeting the most vulnerable residents of Tawi Island and its neighboring villages.
Relief for the Vulnerable
The camp was launched as a direct response to the unprecedented cold wave that has gripped the area this season. Recognizing the humanitarian crisis facing those without adequate bedding, volunteers identified 120 beneficiaries based on urgent need.
Key highlights of the distribution included:
-
Total Distributed: 120 high-quality, light-weight blankets.
-
Primary Focus: Senior citizens and economically weaker families.
-
Target Areas: Residents of Tawi Island and surrounding rural clusters.
Voices of Support
The event was graced by Mrs. Sunita Santoshi and Mrs. Neeru Sharma, who both emphasized the critical nature of community support during natural hardships.
“It is heartening to see this assistance reaching the most deserving senior citizens. During weather conditions as challenging as these, such dedicated efforts are a lifeline.” — Mrs. Sunita Santoshi
Mrs. Neeru Sharma delivered a poignant address that moved many in attendance. She spoke on the “collective social responsibility” we share toward the elderly, urging a spirit of compassion and immediate action for the underprivileged sections of society.
A Mission of Dignity
HelpAge India, an organization synonymous with the welfare of the elderly, reiterated its commitment to protecting the dignity of senior citizens. The volunteers noted that the “extreme and record-breaking” nature of this winter made the distribution a priority over their standard seasonal programs.
For the residents of Tawi Island, many of whom struggle with the damp and biting cold near the river, the lightweight blankets offer a portable and effective solution to survive the remaining weeks of the winter season.
