Srinagar, January 16:
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather warning for Jammu and Kashmir, predicting the season’s first major heavy snowfall starting January 20, 2026. A series of powerful Western Disturbances is expected to grip the region, bringing heavy to very heavy snow across the Valley and the higher reaches.
The Forecast: A Week of Intense Weather
Weather observers indicate that the region will see an abrupt change in conditions as 2-3 consecutive weather systems move in. While the current weather remains mostly dry, the transition will begin on January 18, culminating in intense activity between January 20 and January 25.
-
Kashmir Plains (including Srinagar): 70% probability of moderate to heavy snowfall (4–8 inches).
-
Tourist Hubs (Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam): Heavy accumulations expected (12–24 inches).
-
Higher Altitudes (Pir Panjal Range): Potential blizzard conditions with 30+ inches of snow.
-
Jammu Division: A mix of rain and snow in the plains, with lighter accumulations compared to the Valley.
Temperature Drop & Chillai Kalan
The snowfall comes during the peak of Chillai Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period. Temperatures are forecast to plummet below -10°C in the plains during peak snow events, while higher altitudes like Ladakh and Sonamarg could see extremes of -20°C.
Infrastructure & Travel Warnings
Authorities have warned of potential large-scale disruptions to essential services. The “Operation Snow Clearance” teams have been put on high alert to keep the NH-44 Srinagar-Jammu Highway functional, though temporary closures are highly likely.
TRAVEL ADVISORY: Tourists are strongly advised to postpone travel to the Valley between January 20 and 22. Airport authorities are monitoring visibility levels, and flight delays are anticipated.
Essential Safety Guidelines
Locals and travelers are urged to follow these safety protocols:
-
Stock Essentials: Ensure a week’s supply of food, medicine, and heating fuel.
