Srinagar, January 12:
Residents of Bagh Roop Singh in the Khanyar area are up in arms against the Jal Shakti (PHE) Department as a severe water shortage enters its second week.
Dozens of households, primarily belonging to the extended Mir family, report that they have not received a single drop of water for the last seven days, bringing daily life to a grinding halt.
A Community in Distress
The crisis has specifically hit the households of Gh Ahmad Mir, Gh Qadir Mir, Nazir Ahmad Mir, Gh Mohad Mir, Mohad Shaban Mir, Gulzar Ahmad Mir, Noor Mohad Mir, Mushtaq Ahmad Mir, and Ali Mohad Mir.
Residents allege that despite the freezing January temperatures, they are being forced to fetch water from distant sources or rely on expensive private tankers to meet basic needs like cooking and sanitation.
“We have been patient, but a week without water is unbearable,” said one of the affected residents. “Our children are struggling, and our kitchens have gone dry. We have made multiple pleas, but the pipes remain empty.”
The locals have formally appealed for immediate intervention from:
-
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah
-
The Chief Engineer, Jal Shakti (PHE) Kashmir
-
Concerned Executive Engineer
Administrative Response Awaited
While the Jal Shakti Department often attributes such disruptions to siltation or technical snags in the filtration plants during winter, the residents of Bagh Roop Singh claim that their specific lane has been neglected while neighboring areas receive supply.
The community has warned of potential protests if the supply is not restored within the next 24 hours. They are urging the Executive Engineer to personally visit the site to identify the blockage or technical fault causing the localized blackout.
