Jammu, Jan 8:
Tensions are rising within the legal academic community in Jammu as PhD scholars, LLM, and LLB students from the University of Jammu prepare to hold a major press briefing tomorrow. The students are uniting to voice their strong opposition to the establishment of the proposed National Law University (NLU) in its current form.
The briefing is scheduled for January 9, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the ground opposite the Department of Law, University of Jammu.
The Core of the Dispute
The protest comes on the heels of recent announcements that the long-awaited NLU is slated to begin operations in the Kashmir Valley (Budgam) by April 2026. While the project has been hailed as a milestone for the Union Territory, law students in Jammu argue that the present plan neglects the regional balance and threatens the standing of existing legal institutions in Jammu.
Key concerns raised by the scholars include:
-
Impact on Existing Institutions: Fears that the new NLU will siphon off resources and prestige from the established Department of Law at the University of Jammu.
-
Regional Disparity: Scholars believe that the “present form” of the university does not adequately represent or serve the interests of students in the Jammu province.
-
Legal Education Quality: Concerns regarding how the establishment will affect the overall legal education framework and the future prospects of current law graduates in the region.
“The establishment of a National Law University in its present form is not acceptable and raises serious concerns affecting existing legal education institutions and students of the region,” stated Adv. Ketan Kumar, an LLM Scholar leading the initiative.
Student Demands and Public Outreach
The press interaction aims to bring these objections directly to the public and the UT authorities. The scholars have extended a formal invitation to all print, electronic, and digital media houses to cover the briefing, emphasizing that the “voices of Jammu’s law students” must be heard.
