Jammu, Jan 6:
In a major breakthrough in the ongoing “War Against Drugs,” the Ramban Police have detained a notorious drug peddler under the stringent Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, 1988. The move is part of an intensifying district-wide campaign to dismantle narcotics networks and safeguard the local youth from substance abuse.
The individual, identified as Wazir Ahmed Shaan (son of Ahmed Din Shaan), a resident of Gool, District Ramban, was taken into preventive custody following his repeated involvement in illicit drug trafficking. According to police authorities, Shaan’s activities posed a “serious threat to public health” and specifically targeted the safety of the district’s youth.
The detention was formalized through Office Order No. PITNDPS-76 of 2025, issued by the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, on December 30, 2025. This order followed a comprehensive review of the evidence and criminal records submitted by the district police.
The preventive detention was triggered by Shaan’s involvement in multiple narcotics-related cases across different jurisdictions:
-
FIR No. 34/2025: Registered at Police Station Gool under Sections 8, 21, and 22 of the NDPS Act.
-
FIR No. 60/2025: Registered at Police Station Gangyal, Jammu under the same sections.
By invoking the PIT-NDPS Act, authorities can hold repeat offenders in preventive detention for an extended period, effectively removing them from the trafficking chain even if they have secured bail in individual cases.
The Ramban Police, under its current leadership, has reiterated a zero-tolerance policy toward drug trafficking. A spokesperson for the district police stated:
“This preventive detention reflects our firm commitment to creating a drug-free society. We are focused on not just arresting peddlers, but dismantling the entire supply network that imperils our future generations.”
Authorities are urging the public to take an active role in this mission. The police have called upon NGOs, religious leaders, parents, and the youth to share any information regarding drug distribution or abuse.
-
Public Safety: To protect the identities of informants, the police ensure complete confidentiality.
-
Continued Vigilance: Special focus remains on monitoring repeat offenders and identifying “hotspots” of drug activity within the district.
