JAMMU, OCT 06: AIIMS Jammu has reached a key milestone by successfully conducting its first Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, signaling a new era for facial surgical treatments in the region. The surgery, performed under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, involved the removal of a large odontogenic cyst from the right maxilla, provisionally diagnosed as an Odontogenic Keratocyst.

The procedure, carried out under general anesthesia, included chemical cauterization and was led by Dr. Amanjot Kaur, Assistant Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, along with an anesthesiology team headed by Dr. Raksha Kundal and Dr. Sandeepika.

This marks the first step in the development of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, which plans to expand its services to include advanced procedures such as Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) ankylosis surgery, Total Joint Replacement (TJR), Genioplasty, Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy (BSSO), Lefort surgeries, and Distraction Osteogenesis (DO).

Prof. (Dr.) Saurabh Kumar Gupta, Head of the Department of Dentistry, congratulated Dr. Kaur and her team for their achievement, which strengthens the department’s capabilities and enhances patient care in the region.

AIIMS Jammu is now equipped to cater to patients with maxillofacial issues from Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Leh-Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh. Dr. Amanjot Kaur noted the strong patient response in outpatient services and emphasized that the addition of TMJ and corrective jaw surgeries will greatly benefit patients, reducing the need to seek treatment outside the region.
