“Special Smiles”: Special Olympics Bharat Hosts Mega Oral Health Drive for Intellectually Challenged Athletes

Jammu, Jan 6:

In a heart-warming start to the New Year, the Special Olympics Bharat (SOB), J&K UT chapter, organized a specialized oral health screening and awareness program titled “Special Smiles”. The event, held at the Sahyog Bharat Campus, was dedicated to children and athletes with intellectual disabilities.

The initiative aimed to bridge the gap in healthcare for specially-abled individuals by focusing on oral hygiene, early detection of dental issues, and overall wellness.

A team of highly qualified dental and healthcare professionals volunteered their services to provide comprehensive check-ups. The medical team included:

  • Dr. Harmeet Kaur, Dr. Shalija Bhagat, and Dr. Ashmeen Kaur: Conducted free oral health screenings and provided preventive care advice.

  • Dr. A.V. Himadri (BAMS, MHA): Managed logistical support and conducted general health assessments for all participants.

The initiative was specially supported by Dr. Shalija Dental Clinic. The participating doctors expressed deep professional satisfaction, pledging their continued support to the Special Olympics mission of inclusive healthcare.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Ashwini Jojra, Founder President and Area Director of Special Olympics Bharat, J&K UT, reiterated the organization’s commitment to improving the quality of life for the intellectually challenged.

“Programs like ‘Special Smiles’ are not just about dental check-ups; they are about building confidence and ensuring that our athletes lead a life of dignity and health,” said Dr. Jojra.

The event saw participation from prominent citizens and volunteers, including Dr. Ajay Kumar, Prabhu Ji, Thakur Jagdev Singh, Ashwini Kumar, Alla Rakhi, Vandana Jojra, Suresh Kumar (SI), S. Gurjeet Singh, Sahil Badyal (Program Manager, SOB), Hari Vishwas, Sharun Badyal, and Aman Kangotra.

The program concluded with a Vote of Thanks presented by Mr. Sahil Badyal, who emphasized that good oral health is a vital component of the overall well-being of special children.
