Punjab Encounter: Accused in Killing of Two Cops Shot Dead in Gurdaspur After Daring Escape

Punjab, Feb 25:

A high-stakes police operation in Punjab ended in a fatal encounter early Sunday morning. Ranjit Singh, the prime suspect in the recent killing of two Punjab Police officials, was shot dead after a dramatic escape from custody following a road accident.

The Incident: Escape Amidst Dense Fog

The chain of events began in the early hours of February 25. A Punjab Police team was transporting Ranjit Singh—who had been apprehended just a day earlier on February 24—when their government vehicle met with a severe accident near Behrampur in Gurdaspur district.

According to official sources, dense fog and poor visibility caused the police vehicle to overturn. Taking advantage of the chaos and the mangled state of the vehicle, Singh managed to break free from custody and fled into the nearby fields.

The Chase and Encounter

The Punjab Police immediately launched a massive search and chase operation, cordoning off the surrounding areas. The pursuit culminated between 6:30 AM and 6:45 AM near Gurudwara Bibi Sundri in the village of Nawapind Bahadur.

A confrontation ensued when the police intercepted the fugitive. During the exchange of fire, Ranjit Singh sustained critical gunshot wounds. He was later declared dead by officials.
