Jammu, January 10:
A significant leadership transition took place at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu today as Prof. (Dr.) Shakti Kumar Gupta officially completed his term as the founding Executive Director and CEO. Under his stewardship, the institute transformed from a blueprint into a national healthcare landmark.
In an official communiqué from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, it was announced that Dr. Daya Nand Sharma, currently the Executive Director of AIIMS Rewari, has been assigned the additional charge of AIIMS Jammu for a period of three months or until a regular appointment is made.
A Legacy of Record-Breaking Development
Prof. Gupta’s tenure will be remembered for the rapid physical and academic expansion of the institute. Despite the hurdles of the global COVID-19 pandemic, AIIMS Jammu achieved the following:
-
Infrastructure Marvel: Completion of 43 major buildings in just three and a half years.
-
National Recognition: Secured the 7th position in Outlook Magazine’s 2025 Government Medical Universities Ranking, making it the second-highest-ranked AIIMS in India after Delhi.
-
Award-Winning Quality: The project received the Best Project Award at the 170th CPWD Annual Day, presented by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
Clinical Excellence: A “National Healthcare Beacon”
Since commencing OPD services on August 1, 2024, the institute has become a lifeline for the people of Jammu & Kashmir, drastically reducing the need for patients to travel to Delhi or Chandigarh for specialized care.
Academic and Research Growth
Prof. Gupta leaves behind a robust academic ecosystem. What began with a single MBBS batch has grown into a diverse institution offering MD/MS, MDS, M.Ch, and B.Sc. Nursing programs. With over 140 ongoing research projects and collaborations with IIT Jammu and the University of Alabama, the foundation for the future of medical research in the region is firmly set.
The AIIMS Jammu fraternity expressed deep gratitude to Prof. Gupta for his “visionary leadership” and “dedicated service.” As Dr. Daya Nand Sharma steps in, the focus remains on maintaining the momentum of this premier institution and continuing the mission of “Patient First.”
