Srinagar, Feb 26:

In a major relief for commuters and traders, the District Magistrate of Shopian has officially ordered the reopening of the historic Mughal Road for vehicular traffic starting February 27, 2026.

The road, which serves as a vital alternative link connecting the Kashmir Valley with the Rajouri and Poonch districts, had been closed due to heavy winter snow and hazardous conditions.

Key Highlights of the Official Order

The Office of the District Magistrate, Shopian, has outlined specific conditions for the resumption of traffic on the Shopian to Peer Ki Gali stretch of National Highway-701A:

  • Weather Dependency: Movement is strictly subject to fair weather conditions.

  • Advisory Compliance: All commuters must strictly follow the daily timing and safety advisories issued by the Traffic Police.

  • Safety Measures: The 52 RCC GREF (Border Roads Organization) has been put on high alert to manage any sudden landslides or avalanches.

Ensuring Safe Passage: GREF and Police on High Alert

To prevent any mishaps on the treacherous mountain passes, the administration has deployed specialized teams:

  • BRO/GREF: Men and machinery are stationed at vulnerable points to tackle shooting stones and snow slides immediately.

  • Traffic Enforcement: The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shopian, along with the ARTO and Dy SP Traffic, have been tasked with deploying adequate personnel to regulate the flow of vehicles and prevent over-speeding or overloading.

Important Guidelines for Commuters

Authorities have urged travelers not to embark on the journey without checking the latest status.

“Commuters are advised to follow official traffic updates and ensure their vehicles are fit for hilly terrain before planning travel on this route,” the official statement read.

The reopening of the Mughal Road is expected to significantly reduce the traffic load on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH44) and facilitate easier movement of essential supplies and passengers.
