Leh, Jan 14:
In a dramatic race against time and nature, four tourists from Agra, Uttar Pradesh, were safely rescued by Ladakh police on Tuesday after being stranded for days in life-threatening, sub-zero conditions.
The group—identified as Yash Mittal, Shivam Chaudhary, Jaiveer Chaudhary, and Shadanshu Faujdar—had been the subject of an intensive search operation after losing contact with their families during a trip to the high-altitude Pangong Lake.
The Wrong Turn
The ordeal began on January 9, when the group set out for Pangong Lake in their private vehicle. On their return journey to Leh, the tourists reportedly made a critical navigation error, mistakenly taking the Leh-Manali road.
This high-altitude route is currently closed to all traffic due to heavy winter snowfall and treacherous conditions.
Two Nights of Survival
According to police officials, the tourists became stranded after their vehicle met with a minor accident on the snow-slicked road. Facing plummeting temperatures, the four men displayed remarkable resilience:
-
The Car as Shelter: They spent the first two nights inside their vehicle, keeping the engine running to use the heater.
-
Running on Empty: Once the fuel was exhausted, they were forced to abandon the car and seek shelter on foot.
-
The Final Refuge: They eventually found an isolated hut approximately 20 km from their vehicle, where they awaited rescue as temperatures dropped well below freezing.
The Coordinated Rescue
The search was triggered after families in Agra reported the men missing. Ladakh police swiftly fanned out across the rugged terrain, focusing on the last known GPS coordinates toward Sarchu.
Search teams combed through notorious stretches including Debring and Whisky Nalla before locating the abandoned vehicle. Following tracks and local intel, they discovered the four men inside the hut.
“The tourists were found in stable condition despite the harsh environment. They have been provided with food, water, and medical aid,” a senior police official confirmed.
Current Status
The rescued group is currently being transported back to Leh. Officials confirmed they will be officially reunited with their families on Wednesday, January 15.
