Jammu, April 6:
The Department of Cardiology at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu has reached a major clinical milestone by successfully performing a complex Left Main (LM) artery bifurcation stenting on a patient with life-threatening heart disease.
The procedure is being hailed as a significant leap for healthcare in North India, utilizing cutting-edge “sonic wave” technology to treat a heavily calcified heart artery.
The Case: Overcoming “Rock-Hard” Blockages
The patient arrived at AIIMS Jammu suffering from a Non-ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI)—a serious form of heart attack. Diagnostic imaging revealed a “Left Main bifurcation lesion,” one of the most dangerous locations for a blockage.
The situation was further complicated by heavy calcification—dense, bone-like deposits within the artery walls that make standard stenting nearly impossible and extremely high-risk.
The Solution: Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL)
To tackle the hardened calcium, Dr. Zubair Farooq and Dr. Mayank Saini (Assistant Professors, Dept. of Cardiology) employed Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL).
How it Works:
-
Sonic Pressure Waves: The technology uses sound waves to safely fracture calcium deposits.
-
Precision: Unlike older methods, IVL breaks the “rock” without damaging the soft, delicate tissue of the artery.
-
Seamless Stenting: Once the calcium was fractured, the team was able to place the stent precisely, restoring optimal blood flow to the heart.
A Hub for Excellence in North India
Prof. (Dr.) D. N. Sharma, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, lauded the cardiology team and the Cath Lab technical staff for their precision.
“This milestone reflects the institute’s growing capability to deliver advanced, world-class cardiac care. The successful use of technologies like IVL demonstrates our commitment to providing cutting-edge treatment for the region,” said Dr. Sharma.
By The Numbers: Rapid Growth at AIIMS Jammu
Since the Cardiac Cath Lab was commissioned just three months ago, the department has seen an extraordinary surge in activity:
-
150+ Procedures: Including coronary angioplasties, implantable devices, and peripheral vascular interventions.
-
Advanced Tech: Integration of IVL and other high-end interventions within weeks of opening.
-
Regional Impact: Establishing AIIMS Jammu as a primary center for complex cardiovascular care, reducing the need for patients to travel to Delhi or Punjab for life-saving surgeries.
