Justice Sanjiv Khanna

NEW DELHI, OCT 24: Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) and will take the oath of office on November 11, 2024. The appointment follows the retirement of incumbent CJI Justice D Y Chandrachud, who will demit office on November 10 after reaching the retirement age of 65.

Justice Chandrachud, who assumed the role of CJI on November 8, 2022, will be succeeded by Justice Khanna, who will serve as CJI for a little over six months, until May 13, 2025.

The official appointment was confirmed by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on X, stating, “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President, after consultation with Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024.”
