JAMMU, OCT 26 – Lt Gen M V Suchindra Kumar, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Northern Command, outlined the Indian Army’s crucial role in nation-building and security enhancement across Jammu and Kashmir in a media briefing held on Friday. Underlining the Army’s commitment to the principle of “Service Before Self,” he highlighted its comprehensive efforts in border security, counter-terrorism, and social development within the region.
Lt Gen Kumar emphasized the Army’s focus on dismantling the terror network in Jammu & Kashmir, with initiatives aimed at empowering youth and women, promoting education and sports, and reviving the cultural heritage of the region. “At the core of this strategy is to strengthen the relationship between citizens and soldiers, fostering nationalist and mainstream narratives among the youth,” he noted.
The GOC-in-C stated that these efforts have not only strengthened community engagement but also supported the effective conduct of military operations. The Indian Army’s dual approach – combining kinetic and non-kinetic operations – has created a safer environment, particularly through the establishment of a robust anti-infiltration grid along the Line of Control (LoC) and focused counter-terrorism operations in the hinterland, promoting peace and development across Jammu & Kashmir.
He also highlighted the Army’s collaboration with other agencies, including the civil administration, Central Armed Police Forces, local police, and intelligence agencies. “This synergy has yielded significant results, bolstering security and fostering an environment of prosperity,” he added.
To enhance operational readiness, Lt Gen Kumar detailed ongoing multi-agency infrastructure development efforts along the northern borders. He revealed that several advanced weapon platforms and equipment are being procured, along with initiatives to upgrade existing equipment, aimed at boosting the region’s operational capabilities.
Additionally, Lt Gen Kumar referenced a recent statement by Foreign Secretary Mr. Vikram Misri regarding India-China border negotiations. According to Misri, diplomatic and military dialogues have led to an agreement on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), resolving issues that have persisted since 2020.
Lt Gen Kumar also reaffirmed the Army’s support for the Make in India initiative, highlighting the Northern Command’s involvement in developing technology through industry partnerships. “This partnership will help transform the Army into a self-reliant and technologically advanced force, enabling us to maintain an edge in our operations,” he said.
The Army’s developmental initiatives under “Operation Sadbhavana” were also discussed. Through this program, the Army supports various development projects in remote areas of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, including providing quality education to local students via Army Goodwill Schools. Many students also receive scholarships to study outside the Union Territories, bolstering educational opportunities in the region.
Concluding his address, Lt Gen Kumar emphasized the peaceful and secure environment in Jammu & Kashmir resulting from the combined efforts of the Indian Army and other stakeholders. He assured the region’s residents of the Army’s continued dedication to maintaining security and fostering prosperity across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
