Jammu, Feb 18:

In a landmark achievement for the healthcare sector of Jammu and Kashmir, Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has become the first among the newly established medical colleges in the Union Territory to receive approval for a Superspeciality course in Cardiology.

The National Board of Examinations (NBEMS) has officially accredited three DrNB Cardiology seats to the Department of Cardiology at GMC Anantnag, marking a major leap in medical education and specialized patient care in the region.

A Milestone for South Kashmir

The approval is seen as a transformative step for GMC Anantnag, evolving it into a premier hub for advanced medical training and tertiary healthcare. This development is expected to significantly reduce the burden on hospitals in Srinagar and Jammu, as patients from South Kashmir will no longer need to travel long distances for advanced cardiac treatment.

Minister Sakeena Itoo Commends the Feat

Minister for Health and Medical Education, Sakeena Itoo, congratulated the administration, faculty, and staff for this prestigious feat. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding specialized healthcare access.

“The sanctioning of a Superspeciality Cardiology course is a testament to our resolve to upgrade healthcare infrastructure. It ensures that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have access to high-quality specialized treatment closer to home,” the Minister stated.

Why This Matters:

  • Historic First: It is the first of the peripheral/newly established GMCs in J&K to reach this level of accreditation.

  • Advanced Care: Strengthens tertiary care services, specifically focusing on complex heart conditions.

  • Research & Training: Opens doors for medical aspirants to pursue high-level specialization within the UT.

  • Benchmark: Sets a high standard for other newly established medical colleges across India.

Infrastructure and Growth

The Minister emphasized that the Omar Abdullah-led government is following a comprehensive approach—combining infrastructure development, procurement of advanced equipment, and recruitment of specialist faculty to make J&K a self-reliant healthcare hub.

With this accreditation, GMC Anantnag is now poised to emerge as a key center for advanced cardiac research, training, and life-saving interventions.
