Jammu, Feb 4:
Standing at the forefront of oncology care in the Union Territory, AIIMS Jammu today observed World Cancer Day 2026 with a series of deeply moving, patient-centric events. Aligned with the global theme “United by Unique,” the institute focused on the individual humanity behind every diagnosis, bridging the gap between clinical excellence and emotional support.
The observance was held under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) D.N. Sharma (Executive Director & CEO) and Prof. (Dr.) Shabab Lalit Angurana (Dean Research & Head of Radiation Oncology).
The “Human Experience”: Sharing the Journey
The highlight of the day was the “Human Experience” session—a platform where patients and their families moved the audience to tears and hope with their personal narratives.
-
The Patient’s Voice: Survivors shared their battles, emphasizing that while medical protocols may be standardized, the path to healing is a uniquely personal emotional journey.
-
The Caregiver’s Strength: Family members spoke about the psychological toll of caregiving, reinforcing the AIIMS Jammu motto for the day: “No one walks alone.”
-
Gratitude: Families expressed heartfelt thanks to the faculty, residents, and nursing staff for transforming the hospital experience into a space of compassion.
Creative Advocacy & Awareness
To engage the younger generation and staff, the institute organized a Poster Competition on February 3rd.
-
Art for Awareness: Participants used creative mediums to broadcast messages on early prevention, the stigma surrounding cancer, and the power of multidisciplinary care.
-
Early Diagnosis: Experts, including Dr. Paras Khanna (Surgical Oncology) and Dr. Girija Priya Sharma (Radiation Oncology), led sessions highlighting how early detection remains the most potent tool in the fight against cancer.
Symbolizing Hope: A Ceremonial Conclusion
The day ended with symbolic gestures designed to uplift those currently undergoing treatment:
-
Care Baskets: Distributed to patients as a token of empathy and solidarity.
-
Cake Cutting: A celebration of life and the resilience of survivors.
-
Balloon Release: Hundreds of balloons were released into the Jammu sky, representing the lifting of the burden of cancer through collective effort and scientific progress.
“At AIIMS Jammu, we are not just treating a disease; we are supporting a life. Every patient’s journey is unique, but our commitment to them is a united, unwavering promise,” remarked Prof. (Dr.) Shabab Lalit Angurana.
Why 2026 is a Milestone for AIIMS Jammu
Since launching its state-of-the-art Chemotherapy and Precision Oncology facilities late last year, AIIMS Jammu has successfully prevented hundreds of patients from having to travel outside the UT for advanced treatment. Today’s event reaffirms its status not just as a medical hub, but as a beacon of hope for the entire region.
