Pakistani Policemen Dismissed

LAHORE, FEB 25: In a significant disciplinary action, over 100 policemen from Pakistan’s Punjab Police have been dismissed for refusing to perform security duties during the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The dismissed personnel belonged to various wings of the police force and were assigned critical roles, including escorting teams between Qaddafi Stadium in Lahore and designated hotels.

A Punjab Police official revealed that the dismissed officers were either repeatedly absent or outright refused to fulfill their assigned security responsibilities. “The police officials were tasked with ensuring the safety of international teams, but many chose to remain absent or declined their duties altogether,” the official stated.

Inspector General of Punjab Police (IGP) Usman Anwar has taken serious note of the situation, ordering strict action against the negligent officers. “There is no room for negligence when it comes to the security of international events,” IGP Anwar emphasized, highlighting the importance of upholding Pakistan’s global image during high-profile events.

While no official reason has been provided for the mass refusal, local media suggests that extended working hours and overwhelming duty schedules contributed to the unrest among the police force.

The controversy comes as Pakistan’s cricket team faced an early exit from the Champions Trophy after heavy defeats to New Zealand and India, adding to the nation’s disappointment.

Meanwhile, Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar dismissed rumors of any terror threats affecting the tournament. Speaking to Geo News on Monday, he reassured fans, stating, “Pakistan is peacefully and very ably hosting the ICC Champions Trophy. Our grounds are full, fans from around the world are here, and the streets are filled with people celebrating cricket.”

Despite the security concerns, the tournament continues with high enthusiasm from cricket fans across Pakistan and the world.
