JAMMU, SEPT 14: In a significant move aimed at cracking down on absconders, Jammu Police has on Saturday initiated legal proceedings under Section 84 of the Public Safety Act (PSA) against Mohd Asgar alias Tola, a known absconder from Chowadhi, Jammu. The action, overseen by SSP Jammu, marks the first instance of such proceedings being used to track down an absconder who has been evading arrest despite an outstanding warrant.

Mohd Asgar, son of Bashir Ahmed, is a history-sheeter from Police Station Channi Himmat and has been on the run after a warrant was issued by the District Magistrate (DM) Jammu. Asgar has been avoiding arrest for a long time, prompting the authorities to seek court intervention. On the DM’s recommendation, the Chief Judicial Magistrate Jammu initiated proclamation proceedings under Sections 12(a) and (b) of the Public Safety Act 1978 to ensure his surrender.

The court has ordered Asgar to surrender before the competent authority within 30 days, failing which additional legal actions will be taken. As part of the operation, a joint police team from Police Station Channi Himmat, under the supervision of SP South and SDPO City East Jammu, served notices to the absconder’s family and pasted them at prominent locations in Chowadhi to ensure compliance.

The initiative has been hailed by local residents and netizens in Jammu, who see it as a much-needed step to enforce the law and bring long-evading criminals to justice. The move is also in line with directives from the Election Commission of India, which called for strict action against absconders and criminals ahead of upcoming elections.
