JAMMU, SEPT 15: The 57th Engineers’ Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm by The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Local Centre at its Institutional Complex, Jammu. The event, organized to commemorate the 163rd birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, saw Er. Sandeep Gupta, IRSE, Chief Administrative Officer, USBRL Project, Northern Railway, J&K, as the Chief Guest. Er. Bimal Kumar Tickoo, Former Secretary cum Development Commissioner (PWD) J&K, was the Guest of Honour.

The event was attended by a large number of engineers from various departments and organizations. Prof. Dr. Bhawna Sharma, FIE, Chairman of the Jammu Local Centre, delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the importance of this year’s theme, “Driving Sustainability with Engineering Solutions Embracing the Latest AI-driven Technologies.” She highlighted the growing integration of artificial intelligence with sustainable practices to address global challenges.

Er. Vijay Kumar Sharma, MIE, paid rich tributes to Sir M. Visvesvaraya, recalling his sterling qualities of austerity, integrity, competence, and discipline. The gathering honored the great engineer’s contribution to the field of engineering in India.

During the ceremony, Er. A. K. Nagpal, FIE, Former Chairman of IEI Jammu, was awarded the prestigious IEI Award for his outstanding services to the engineering profession and the Institution of Engineers. He was presented with a Gold Medallion. Additionally, the R. L. Sharma Memorial Gold Medal was awarded to Er. Joy Ganjoo for presenting the Best Technical Paper, while Er. B. L. Rawal received the Rudra Bhagwati Silver Medal and Er. Ranjeev Sawhney the IEI Bronze Medal for their contributions to technical papers during 2023-24.

The first issue of the 22nd volume of the IEI Jammu News, the quarterly newsletter of the Jammu Local Centre, was also released during the event by the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour in the presence of the editorial board members, including Prof. Dr. Bhawna Sharma, Er. P. K. Nanda, Er. Anil Verma, Er. Pooja Wazir, and Er. Sachin Tickoo, Honorary Secretary of IEI Jammu.

Er. Sandeep Gupta, the Chief Guest, presented a detailed overview of the USBRL Project, showcasing the engineering marvels of the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, and the Anji Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed bridge. Four technical papers were presented on the event’s theme by Er. P. K. Nanda, Er. B. L. Rawal, Er. Joy Ganjoo, and Er. Akash Dusgotra.

Er. Bimal Kumar Tickoo, Guest of Honour, discussed the transformative role of AI in sustainability. He explained how AI is helping address challenges such as climate change, improving agricultural productivity, and enhancing city infrastructure through smart traffic systems and waste management.

Er. Sachin Tickoo, MIE, Honorary Secretary, concluded the event by praising the pivotal role of engineers from J&K in shaping the region’s infrastructure and extending his gratitude to all attendees, departments, and media for their support in making the event a success.
