The Electoral Commission (EC) has debunked claims that some individuals in the Asawase Constituency in the Ashanti Region had access to thumb-printed ballot papers as claimed by main opposition the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Addressing the media in Asawase, on the 7th of December 2020, Regional EC Director Benjamin Bannor-Bio stated that the ballot papers that were being shown as rigging materials were fake.
In the early hours of Monday, December 7, just after polls started, the NDC held a press conference and claimed that the police had arrested an individual who was found with multiple thumb-printed ballot papers.
But Mr Bannor-Bio said: “When these claims were made, we decided to investigate it. When we brought the ballot papers, we realised that the papers did not belong to the Electoral Commission.
“They were different things that someone had printed to do their own thing. They do not even have the EC stamps.
“I have met the Honourable Muntaka at his office, and he himself has attested to the fact that the ballot papers were not that of our [EC’s] ballot papers.”
He added: “We want to make it clear to the public that the system is reliable and can be verified.”
