KOLKATA, SEPT 15: A local court in Kolkata on Sunday remanded the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and Tala police station officer-in-charge, Abhijit Mondal, to CBI custody until September 17. The two are being investigated in connection with the rape and murder of a doctor at the state-run hospital, according to a CBI officer.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) presented both Ghosh and Mondal in court, seeking their custody for further questioning. “We have obtained their custody for three days until September 17, and both will now be interrogated together. The duo played critical roles in the RG Kar case,” the officer said.

Mondal was arrested by the CBI on Saturday evening, and additional charges of evidence tampering were added against Ghosh, who is already in judicial custody in a corruption case related to RG Kar hospital. Mondal is also accused of tampering with evidence, delaying the registration of an FIR, and other related offences.

The CBI claimed in court that Ghosh and Mondal were involved in a “bigger conspiracy” and had crucial roles in the crime. Both have been charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for disobeying lawful orders, tampering with evidence, and criminal conspiracy.

According to the CBI, Ghosh was in communication with Mondal, providing instructions on how to handle the case. Mondal reportedly became aware of the doctor’s death at 10 AM on August 9, but the FIR was not filed until after 11 PM, raising suspicions of a deliberate attempt to downplay the incident and protect those involved.

The CBI emphasized in court that the police should have initiated the case suo motu, given the seriousness of the crime, which involved both rape and murder.

Sandip Ghosh was previously arrested on September 2 in connection with financial irregularities at RG Kar hospital. The body of the postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered in the hospital’s seminar hall on August 9. So far, three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case. (PTI)
