SRINAGAR, OCT 13: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is gearing up to hold its legislative party meeting next week to elect the leader of the opposition in the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly. The decision comes as the party seeks to consolidate its position as the main opposition force in the newly formed Assembly.

According to sources, the BJP is expected to finalize its legislature party leader in the upcoming meeting, who will also assume the role of the leader of the opposition. Sunil Kumar Sharma, MLA from Padder Nagseni, and Devinder Rana, MLA from Nagrota, are reportedly leading the race for the key position.

The BJP is poised to secure the position of the leader of the opposition, given its strength of 29 MLAs in the Assembly. Among the other opposition parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has three MLAs, while the Peoples Conference holds one seat.

To oversee the proceedings, the BJP has appointed senior leaders Tarun Chugh and Prahlad Joshi as observers for the legislative party meeting. Their role will be to facilitate the election process and ensure a smooth selection of the party’s opposition leader.
