JAMMU, OCT 29: In a landmark achievement, the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jammu, has successfully performed its first palliative esophageal self-expanding metallic stent (SEMS) procedure to manage an advanced, complicated case of esophageal cancer. This innovative intervention highlights AIIMS Jammu’s commitment to delivering specialized care for patients with complex esophageal diseases.
As per the statement issued here, the patient, who suffered from severe choking and difficulty swallowing, underwent an endoscopic evaluation revealing mid-esophageal malignancy with a likely fistula to the airway. A subsequent CT scan confirmed these findings, and on October 21, a partially covered esophageal SEMS was placed, allowing the patient to resume oral intake. The stent, designed to keep the esophagus open and prevent food and liquids from entering the airway, has significantly enhanced the patient’s quality of life.
The procedure was led by Dr. Sahil Sandal, Assistant Professor and Officer in Charge of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, with support from Senior Nursing Officer Miss Harshita, Endoscopic Technician Mr. Madhusudhan, and other dedicated nursing officers. Dr. Sandal described this SEMS placement as a “milestone” for AIIMS Jammu, particularly beneficial for patients in advanced stages of esophageal cancer who are ineligible for surgery.
“This minimally invasive procedure provides critical symptom relief without requiring major surgery,” Dr. Sandal explained, adding that the department plans to expand its repertoire of minimally invasive treatments to offer both palliative and curative options for gastrointestinal and hepatopancreatobiliary malignancies. He noted that the success of this procedure means patients requiring luminal stenting no longer need to travel outside the state for specialized care.
Prof. (Dr.) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, praised the team’s efforts and stressed the importance of accessible, advanced healthcare for the Jammu community and surrounding regions. “This initiative exemplifies AIIMS Jammu’s mission to bring the best healthcare practices to the people we serve. We are dedicated to further enhancing our facilities and meeting the growing healthcare needs of our region,” Prof. Gupta stated
