SRINAGAR, MAR 24: The Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar on Sunday has been awarded a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ by the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, in recognition of its excellence in medical research.
The institution secured the highest ranking among medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir that host a Multidisciplinary Research Unit (MRU). The award was received by Prof. (Dr) Iffat Hassan, Principal and Dean of GMC Srinagar, along with Dr. Mohammad Younis Rather, Scientist C at MRU GMC Srinagar.
The recognition was conferred during ‘The Medical Colleges Research Connect 2025’, organized by the Department of Health Research at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The event reviewed the progress of the Central Sector Umbrella Scheme (2013-14), which supports 118 MRUs across government medical colleges and other institutes in India to foster advanced health research.
The conference was graced by distinguished dignitaries, including Prof. (Dr) V.K. Paul, Member (Health) of NITI Aayog, who served as the Chief Guest, Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary, DHR & DG, ICMR, Prof. (Dr) B.N. Gangadhar, Chairman of the National Medical Commission, and Prof. (Dr) V.M. Katoch, Former Secretary, DHR & DG, ICMR.
The review panel particularly appreciated the contributions of Nodal Officer Prof. (Dr) Sabhiya Majid, Head of the Biochemistry Department at GMC Srinagar, and Dr. Mohammad Younis Rather, Scientist C, MRU GMC Srinagar, for their timely execution of multi-centric projects in collaboration with NIIH Mumbai, research publications in international journals, and for organizing regular workshops and CMEs on molecular biology and clinical research.
